How to Detect a Gas Leak?

There are three ways to detect a gas leak: smell, listen and look. Gas leaks usually have a unique odor that is similar to the smell of rotten eggs. You can tell by the intensity of the smell if there is a small leak or large leak to deal with. The stronger the smell the larger the leak may be.

A gas leak can also be discovered by listening closely to gas appliances for a hissing sound. The hissing sound may not be very loud so the area has to be quiet for the sound to be recognized.

Sometimes people can recognize a gas leak by looking at it. Below is a list for visual signs of a gas leak.

  1. Bubbling in flooded or moist areas
  2. Flames from an ignited leak
  3. Dead vegetation in areas that are usually green

What to Do if One is Found?

When you find a gas leak take proper caution immediately. Make sure you and all other occupants leave the premises as soon as possible. Everyone involved should find a safe environment to remain until the leak has been repaired.

Gas leaks can be scary and should always be taken seriously. Do not hesitate to call your trusted plumbing company to take care of the leak for you. Working with professionals is always best when it comes to repairing dangerous leaks. Professionals know how to safely repair gas leaks and may be able to give you tips on how to prevent a leak from happening again.

What Not to do in Case of a Found Gas Leak?
When a gas leak is found you do not want to do anything that will ignite a fire. Do not use any electronic devices including cell phones. Also, do not try to shut off any natural gas valves. You do not want to put yourself in a toxic environment longer than you have already experienced by searching for gas valves that can be dangerous. Equally important, open flames or matches should not be used when a gas leak is found. Using open flames or matches can ignite a fire during a gas leak. Provided that a gas leak is in a garage or in the same area as a vehicle, do not start the car up. Starting the car up can ignite a fire or cause an explosion.
